HOW TO USE THIS TOOL

This calculator allows you to estimate yardage for different finished sizes of the Kirriemuir shawl.

Horizontal repeats refers to how many times each chart is repeated across each round, affecting the length of the shawl; vertical repeats of Chart C affect the width of the shawl.

As written the pattern uses 12 horizontal repeats and 1 vertical repeat in the small version; 16 horizontal repeats and 3 vertical repeats in the large version.

Changing the values of the horizontal and vertical repeats in the calculator will show you estimated yardage and finished measurements (click the switch to toggle between imperial and metric measurements).

The estimated yardage includes 10% extra for safety - but please remember that these estimates will only be accurate if you are matching the stated gauge (20.5 sts and 35 rnds to 4˝/(10 cm) in stocking stitch) and using a similar weight of yarn to that stated in the pattern.

If you are changing the number of horizontal repeats, your cast-on stitches will be different - this is given at the bottom of the calculator. Once you find a combination of horizontal and vertical repeats that fits your intended yardage and desired size, you may want to make a note of your cast-on stitches and number of repeats, before beginning the pattern. Happy knitting!
